I live on Reading Place in Newmarket with my husband and two children, who are both currently in school. I find myself now with time to participate in my community by volunteering to support a cause that I strongly believe in.
We were at a family reunion and my cousin, Ivanna Read, who lives in Orillia, was sharing with me an exciting project to increase the awareness of services that are available for adult upgrading that she was a part of last year in her home town. My friend Rita DeBook said that she has volunteered similarly in her community in Niagara. This gave me the idea of approaching Literacy Council York-Simcoe to see how I could share my passion for learning with the rest of my community. It turns out that my brother has been taking computer training at LCYS for several weeks.
I love to read, write and work on my computer. I am an avid learner who tries to learn something new every day. I want to make other members of my community aware of the services so that they, too, can learn that new doors can open for them.
After meeting with members of the Council, which is, by the way, celebrating 30 years of service this year, I was asked if I would be interested in being a community ambassador; I jumped at the chance. You will be seeing me out and about in our community letting people know that “ Learning for Life Begins with Literacy”
